What Process Leads to the President's Impeachment

Today, Vahagn Hovakimyan, a member of the Civil Contract party’s board and a deputy from the "My Step" bloc, wrote on his Facebook page that there are apparent grounds for initiating the impeachment process against Armen Sarkissian based on gross violations of the Constitution (Article 141).

However, according to the Constitution, the process of impeaching a president is not that straightforward. Article 141 states that the President of the Republic can be impeached for state treason, other serious crimes, or gross violations of the Constitution.

To conclude whether there are grounds for impeaching the President, the National Assembly must apply to the Constitutional Court with a decision adopted by a majority of the total number of deputies. After obtaining a conclusion, the matter is included in the agenda of the National Assembly.

The National Assembly makes a decision regarding the impeachment of the President with at least two-thirds of the votes of the total number of deputies, as reported by Armdaily.am.

Additionally, according to Article 144 of the Constitution, in case of the President's impeachment, inability to perform duties, resignation, or death, the powers of the President are carried out by the President of the National Assembly until a newly elected President takes office.
