Security Council Calls on President to Approve Prime Minister's Request to Dismiss Chief of General Staff
The Security Council of Armenia, serving as the body that determines the primary directions of defense policy, strongly condemns all attempts to involve the armed forces in political processes. This is stated in a statement from the Security Council office.
The Constitution of Armenia clearly defines the unacceptability of the armed forces' involvement in political processes, as well as the necessity for them to be under civilian control.
According to the law, the appointment and dismissal of the head of the General Staff of the Armed Forces, as a person holding a high military office, is at the discretion of the head of government. The President, as a crucial institution that ensures the observance of the Constitution, is obliged to demonstrate an unequivocal approach in this regard.
In light of the above, the Security Council urges the President of the Republic to approve the Prime Minister's request for the dismissal of the Chief of General Staff and to sign the relevant decree.
