Authorities Are Taking Control of Local Governments: Preparing for Snap Elections
Although authorities announced about two weeks ago that the issue of snap elections was off the table due to a lack of public demand, they have revisited the topic in light of recent developments and are diligently preparing for the elections.
A recent draft bill circulated by the government, according to our sources, can be classified as part of pre-election measures. The draft proposed to relieve mayors and village heads from their positions if their terms have expired during a state of emergency, appoint temporary officials, and extend the tenure of councils until elections are held. It is worth noting that elections cannot be conducted during a state of emergency.
By introducing the institution of temporary mayors, the authorities are preparing for early parliamentary elections, as undesirable individuals could potentially win these positions during local elections. The government, which has accused previous administrations of manipulating local government positions, recognizes that it's impossible to win elections without bringing local governments under their control.
