Accident Caused by Underground Water Leakage from Mine in Syunik

Accident Caused by Underground Water Leakage from Mine in Syunik

The Syunik Territorial Division of the Environmental and Mining Inspection Body reports that on the night of February 26, 2021, around 04:30, an alert was received from the Ministry of Emergency Situations about a large quantity of rusty water flowing onto the highway from the territory of Kapan's LHK.

At the same time, an alert also came from the "Chaarat Kapan" LLC regarding the surface outflow of underground waters. Based on the alert, field research and inspections were conducted by the Syunik Territorial Division of the Inspection Body.

As a result, it was determined that the leakage originated from the transportation mine tunnel of the formerly operational Kapan underground mine, which has not been in operation for quite some time and is not owned by any enterprise with mineral rights.

Studies based on sampling are currently underway. It is noted that the enterprise was carrying out cleaning works in the areas affected by the leakage, both within the enterprise's premises and along the highway.
