The Chief of the General Staff is Not Planning to Resign, Source Says

The Chief of the General Staff of the Armed Forces of Armenia, Lieutenant General Onik Gasparyan, is not planning to submit his resignation. This was reported by a source within the republic's armed forces to Sputnik Armenia.

Since yesterday, individuals have been approaching Gasparyan in an attempt to persuade him to step down. Among those who have met with him are the President of Artsakh, Arayik Harutyunyan, the Director of the National Security Service, Armen Abazyan, as well as one of the advisors to Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan.

According to the source, “Gasparyan makes decisions based solely on the opinions of the heads of departments and commanders of major units. He is committed to his position that the government should resign.”

At this moment, the military is prepared for any developments, including possible attempts at their arrest. A source in the Prosecutor General's Office has also confirmed to Sputnik Armenia information regarding the potential arrests of military personnel, stating that a special forces ‘assault’ aimed at the arrest of generals has been seriously discussed from the outset.

The agency's interlocutor also mentioned that if the authorities use force against demonstrators, the army will not take a position of an observer.
