Azerbaijanis Often Ask: Has Armenia Washed Its Hands of Us? - Tevan Poghosyan

We must show the world that Aliyev's finger-wagging or fist-pounding on the table means nothing to us. This was stated by Tevan Poghosyan, an advisor to the President of Armenia, during a meeting with reporters regarding security issues in Armenia and Artsakh and recent developments in domestic politics.

“In my view, the principles that exist in the negotiation process remain in effect, and it's not the case that the issue of Artsakh's territorial integrity is now off the table. Artsakh has never been part of independent Azerbaijan, and, of course, its territorial integrity issues must be discussed, not forgetting Hadrut, Shushi, Mataghis, Talish, Shahumyan, as well as Berdzor, Karvachar, and so on,” he emphasized, recalling that according to the currently functioning constitution in Artsakh, all these territories are part of the Republic of Artsakh.

Poghosyan noted that, nevertheless, a major question remains unanswered: what does Armenia think about Artsakh? “Artsakh says ‘unification,’ while Armenia somewhat says ‘we are with you.’ But what actions are being taken? This is not being articulated. Perhaps they do not understand what directions should be adopted. Here a notion is forming that Artsakhtsis often see people and ask: has Armenia washed its hands of us, are we on our own? And with this feeling, they think that perhaps they should rely on peacekeeping forces and Russia. Do not be surprised if in the future you see many initiatives to strengthen ties with Russian, as people need to ensure their sense of security,” Poghosyan emphasized.

He also mentioned that he was pleased with the draft prepared by Artsakh's parliamentarians regarding the territories of the Republic of Artsakh occupied by Azerbaijan. “I hope that this will serve as a basis for both preparing a law on occupation in the future and presenting a new application in the negotiation process, as well as solving technical issues. The Minsk Group's co-chairing institution must start its mediating mission as soon as possible and shape that negotiation process,” he stated.

Tevan Poghosyan expressed great sorrow that people are pleased with the fact that our boys are not going to Artsakh. “Perhaps today in Artsakh it is a bit more peaceful and secure than at the borders of Armenia and Syunik,” he said.

It is noteworthy that on February 23, the Permanent Commission on Foreign Relations of the National Assembly of Artsakh convened a meeting to discuss the draft statement regarding the legal status of the territories of the Republic of Artsakh that have come under Azerbaijan's control. The draft will be discussed at the upcoming plenary session.
