Around 200 Coffins Found in Water in Italy

Part of the Camola cemetery in the outskirts of Genoa, Italy, has slipped into the sea due to a landslide, according to reports from the fire department. Local media outlets have reported that more than two hundred coffins, containing the deceased, have fallen into the water.

The drop appears to be several dozen meters, judging by the firefighters' photos, between the water surface and the edge of the rock. The collapse, it is noted, may have been caused by soil erosion exacerbated by severe raging waves in recent years.

According to the newspaper la Stampa, a group of workers at the cemetery was successfully rescued during the landslide. Two chapels have been damaged due to the soil movement. The incident occurred on the afternoon of February 22. Firefighters, police, and coastal conservation workers have visited the site. They have placed underwater barriers to prevent the coffins from drifting away from the shore and have begun lifting them back onto the cemetery grounds, reported RIA Novosti.
