Tons of Oil Products Flood Israeli Shores
In the Mediterranean Sea, near the shores of Israel, there has been an oil spill that has contaminated 150 kilometers of coastal line, resulting in the death of various animals, including those listed in the Red Book. The country's Minister of Ecology has declared an environmental disaster, according to Euronews.
Preliminary data indicates that the spill occurred a few days ago from a vessel near Israel's coastal waters. A substance reminiscent of heavy oil has appeared on the shores. The local flora and fauna have been severely affected by the pollution, particularly sea turtles.
Volunteers have already started working on the cleanup, but several individuals have been hospitalized after inhaling oil vapors. Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu visited the disaster area, stating, "I just spoke with the Egyptian Minister of Energy, who is visiting us, and we suggested that all ships operate with gas engines. Oil products pollute the environment, as has happened here. I believe that if we gather a sufficient number of countries, we can achieve significant changes within a few years."
Currently, there is a risk of oil products entering underground waters. Environmentalists are speaking about the enormous damage. Experts estimate that it will take decades to restore the environment. Hundreds of volunteers are participating in the beach cleanup. Residents of 16 localities are being advised to refrain from visiting the beaches in the coming days.
