What Led to the Resignation of Georgia's Prime Minister

The Ministry of Internal Affairs of Georgia has temporarily halted attempts to arrest opposition leader Nika Melia following the resignation of Prime Minister Giorgi Gakharia. According to TASS, this was announced by the press service of the Ministry of Internal Affairs.

"In connection with the resignation of the Prime Minister of Georgia, the Ministry of Internal Affairs has temporarily postponed the planned measures regarding Nika Melia's case," the statement said.

Earlier, Gakharia announced his resignation, stating that he could not reach an agreement with his team regarding the authorities' decision to arrest Melia.

“Yesterday, the court opted for preventive detention for Mr. Melia. This is a person who has never particularly respected Georgian legislation and who called on our citizens to storm the parliament on June 20 (2019) and was one of the organizers of the parliament invasion. Regardless, my firm stance is that even if legal, it is unacceptable to carry out justice against one individual if it poses a risk to the health and lives of our citizens or creates the potential for political escalation,” Gakharia said.
