Early Elections Will Only Be Held Under One Condition: "Joghvurts"
According to information from the newspaper, the authorities have already sent a draft to the Venice Commission of the Council of Europe regarding amendments to the "Electoral Code." According to our information, the European Commission will have a session in March, during which the amendments to the Electoral Code of Armenia will likely be discussed, and the European body will present its position.
The authorities aim to discuss, adopt, and have their preferred Electoral Code before the end of the parliamentary spring session, which is why they are showing urgency on this issue. First and foremost, the authorities intend to rid themselves of the phrase "stable majority," a term introduced by the previous administration during constitutional amendments.
However, it will not be easy for the current authorities to remove the term "stable majority" from the Electoral Code, as it is enshrined in the Constitution, and constitutional changes must also be made. Sources from the "Joghvurts" newspaper report that the authorities aim to implement constitutional amendments through parliamentary opposition.
Negotiations will be conducted, and if the authorities manage to make these amendments to the Electoral Code by summer after receiving the Venice Commission's approval, they will consider the possibility and options for early parliamentary elections. Until the Electoral Code is tailored to the new authorities' liking, they are not planning to hold elections. This is reported by the "Joghvurts" newspaper.
