Serzh Sargsyan Edited His Statement Text Three Times
The third President of Armenia, Serzh Sargsyan, talked about his emotions before resigning, the fact that he edited his resignation text three times, and the passing of power not to Nikol Pashinyan, but to Karen Karapetyan.
Sargsyan assures that his statement, "Nikol Pashinyan was right. I was wrong," does not refer to the incorrect choice of his successor. He mentioned this in an interview with ArmNews TV network.
“I edited that statement three times. The first time was on the morning of April 23, when I added a few sentences. Afterward, I set the text of the statement aside for 30-40 minutes to reflect, and then I truncated some elements from the complex sentences from a grammatical perspective, simplifying them with the understanding that such a text could escalate the situation. When I felt that the text had taken its final form, I invited Prime Minister Karen Karapetyan and asked him directly, saying the following: ‘Karen, my friend, Mr. Prime Minister, I believe that the solution could be my departure. Are you ready to take on all the responsibility in this situation?’ He immediately said yes, which I appreciate. I said, ‘Then let’s agree that we should go to the presidential office after some time. There was a consultation with the Supreme Patriarch, and immediately after that consultation, you can go to the detention center and inform them that I will resign today, so they can defuse the situation.' Let’s not forget that the next day was April 24. We agreed,” Sargsyan said.
He noted that the discussion was not about transferring power to Nikol Pashinyan but about his resignation.
