First Time Planned Extension of Trolleybus Line, but New Trolleybuses Cannot Be Purchased
In Yerevan, the extension of the trolleybus line is planned for the first time, covering a distance of 1.5 km. This was announced by Yerevan's Deputy Mayor Hrachya Sargsyan during an extraordinary session of the city council.
“For the first time in modern times, we have initiated the extension of the trolleybus line by 1.5 km. This line was at the intersection of Shirak and Artashisyan streets, where trolleybuses used to turn around. I believe we will finish it in March, and trolleybuses will fully operate along Shirak Street,” Sargsyan noted. This will facilitate convenience for residents and prevent traffic congestion at the Shirak-Artashisyan intersection, where the turns were originally made.
The Deputy Mayor also emphasized that since 2020, they have planned to conduct inventory work for trolleybuses, and bookkeeping is being examined. He stressed that a transition to new programming methods will occur.
Does the Yerevan Municipality intend to also renew the trolleybus fleet, as it has for buses? This question was posed to Yerevan Mayor Hayk Marutyan by city council member Izabella Abgaryan. “Of course, we have a strong desire and a goal in place, but one trolleybus costs 500,000 euros, and at this moment, we cannot achieve that goal. Electric transport—trolleybuses and the metro—plays a role in energy security. I regret that we no longer have trams,” said the Mayor.
