Who is the Newly Elected President of the Court of Cassation?

The highest court in Armenia's three-tiered judicial system will now be led by a woman. The National Assembly today, through a closed secret ballot, elected Lilit Tadevosyan, the head of the Criminal Chamber of the Court of Cassation, as its president.

As announced in the parliamentary hall by Vahagn Hovakimyan, the chairman of the Counting Commission, 102 members of the National Assembly voted in favor of Tadevosyan's candidacy, while 1 voted against. It is noteworthy that Lilit Tadevosyan's nomination was put forward by the Supreme Judicial Council of Armenia. The decision was presented in Parliament by Stepan Mikayelyan, who temporarily assumed the duties of the President of the Supreme Judicial Council, as the council’s president Ruben Vardazaryan is on leave due to health issues.

Lilit Tadevosyan holds a doctorate in law and is a professor. She graduated from Yerevan State University and teaches at the same institution. Born in 1978, she has previously served as an investigator, prosecutor, and judge. In 2020, she was awarded the 'Mkhtiar Gosh' medal.

In her speech, Lilit Tadevosyan emphasized the importance of independence for judges and courts, stating that without this independence, there can be no true justice.

It is worth mentioning that the previous president of the Court of Cassation was Ervand Khundkaryan. However, he resigned from his presidential powers last year and was elected as a Constitutional Court judge on September 18.
