New Developments for Couples Facing Infertility
The newspaper "Haykakan Jamanak" reports that amendments and additions will be made to the Republic of Armenia's law on "Human Reproductive Health and Reproductive Rights." It turns out that the existing law includes several restrictions that create barriers for many individuals suffering from infertility, which indirectly affects the growth of the population's birth rate.
According to the newspaper, the Ministry of Health intends to develop reproductive medicine in rural areas and city polyclinics. As a result, couples facing such issues, whose treatment typically lasts from 1 to 2.5 years, will have the opportunity to receive treatment through locally established services instead of having to travel to Yerevan.
Incidentally, a provision has been added to this decision draft, which establishes a preservation period for embryos. After this period, if the couple, either the man or the woman, does not submit a request to clarify the future of the embryo, the healthcare facility will have the discretion to handle the embryos, including providing them free of charge to another infertile couple or to a woman not in a marriage who can carry a pregnancy. Currently, the draft is under discussion.
