Geolocation of the Video Showing Jalal Harutyunyan's Injury
About a month after the second Karabakh war, on October 27, the President of Artsakh, Arayik Harutyunyan, dismissed the Commander of the Defense Army, Lieutenant General Jalal Harutyunyan, by decree. According to the President, the reason for the dismissal was the injury he sustained at a combat position.
Following the announcement, Azerbaijani media reported on Jalal Harutyunyan's death, and a video emerged on YouTube showing a drone strike on a moving vehicle. The footage was widely circulated in Armenian, Azerbaijani, as well as Russian and Turkish media. The video was presented as evidence of the assassination of Jalal Harutyunyan and his team members.
Vahram Poghosyan, the press secretary of the President of Artsakh, told Armenpress that the video circulating in Azerbaijani sources has no relation to Jalal Harutyunyan's injury, reiterating that the Defense Army commander was injured at a combat position.
Media.am has managed to geolocate the location of the strike visible in the video and the explosion of the vehicle. It indeed took place within the territory of the Republic of Artsakh, specifically near the city of Martuni.
Comparisons of images from Telegram channels and later media showed photographs of the exploded vehicle. By comparing the video with the distributed photographs, we understand that they were indeed taken at the same location.
From the photographs, we can be certain that the video was shot on the road leading to Martuni.
