During the Artsakh War, Armenia did not appeal to CSTO for support: Stanislav Zas

The CSTO closely monitored the situation in Nagorno-Karabakh. This was stated by the Secretary General of CSTO, Stanislav Zas, during a meeting with journalists.

“The mechanism for providing assistance to Armenia was not discussed within the CSTO because Yerevan did not appeal to the organization. From the very beginning, we advocated for the cessation of hostilities and the resolution of regional issues through peaceful agreements. Our position has not changed,” he said.

Zas noted that the organization has not limited itself to observing the situation and demanding the cessation of fire and negotiations. “We have done a lot of work. At the same time, it should be understood that we have a Collective Security Treaty, which clearly states the procedure for providing assistance by the CSTO to any of its member states,” he stated, adding that according to Article 4, urgent mutual assistance is provided to a member country if there is a threat, attack, or aggression against its territorial integrity, stability, security, or sovereignty, based on that country’s appeal, including military assistance.

“In that situation, there has been no request from Armenia regarding the provision of military or any other assistance from the CSTO. We did not activate or discuss that mechanism,” he said.

Zas welcomed the trilateral agreement on the cessation of hostilities and the path chosen by the parties for resolving the conflict. He noted that there are conditions for settling this conflict peacefully.
