Video: Avalanche in Russia Leaves Missing Persons and Fatalities

According to the Ministry of Emergency Situations of Russia, an avalanche occurred in the village of Dombay, Karachay-Cherkessia at noon on January 19. The incident led to the death of Haji-Murat Marshankulov, the president of the Alpine Skiing and Snowboarding Federation. His body was retrieved from under the snow, as announced by his son.

Search operations in Dombay have been suspended due to darkness, as reported by the regional department of Russia's Ministry of Emergency Situations. Authorities estimate that between 4 to 12 people may still be trapped under the snow. Later, rescuers reported that six individuals have been able to emerge from beneath the snow layer.
