What Issues Are Being Discussed in Azerbaijan: 3 Key Points by Artem Tonoyan

Iran expert Artem Tonoyan writes: “Currently, one of the not-so-unknown experts on Ilham Aliyev's government is speaking on an Azerbaijani online television channel, particularly regarding foreign and regional issues. Here are three important points the expert emphasized that might also be of interest to us:

  1. Azerbaijan needs to swiftly initiate a resettlement policy in the territories it has taken control over. In terms of infrastructure, there is currently an opportunity to settle people in the cities of Shushi and Hadrut. The Azerbaijani side should prioritize the resettlement of Azerbaijanis in these two cities, especially since there are discussions about settling Hadrut with Azerbaijanis, a location that has seen very few, if any, Azerbaijanis inhabit even during the Soviet era.
  2. A new process for introducing a new ideology has begun in Azerbaijan. The notion of “one nation, two states” is being replaced with the approach of “one nation, one state.”
  3. Conclusions are being made regarding the mistakes and shortcomings made during and after the war. A focal point of attention is the draft resolution adopted by the French Senate calling for the recognition of the Nagorno-Karabakh Republic, which received support from 305 deputies. The primary culprit has been named as Foreign Minister Jeyhun Bayramov, who is officially responsible for the activities or inactivity of the ambassadors.
