The 'My Step' Faction of the National Assembly Will Meet with Gagik Jhangiryan Today

Today, on January 13, at 11 AM, members of the 'My Step' faction of the National Assembly will meet with former military prosecutor Gagik Jhangiryan, during which they will discuss his candidacy for a position as a member of the Supreme Judicial Council. This was announced by 'My Step' faction MP Sargis Khandanyan in a conversation with NEWS.am.

It should be noted that the position in the Supreme Judicial Council became vacant when Hayk Hovhannisyan resigned. Gagik Jhangiryan's candidacy has not been unanimously accepted within the judicial system. In this regard, the 'Zhoghovurd' newspaper reported today that judges from various courts gathered and discussed why Gagik Jhangiryan has set the challenge of entering the Supreme Judicial Council and how the government has tasked him to 'collect the issues of the whiners.' The judges have raised concerns regarding Jhangiryan's age.

Article 80, Clause 9 of the Judicial Code, which describes the requirements for members of the Supreme Judicial Council, confirms that no person who is subject to any legal restrictions for appointment as a judge can be elected by the National Assembly as a member of the Supreme Judicial Council. Article 97 of the same code, which defines the requirements for candidates for judges, states in its first clause that only individuals aged between 25 and 60, with electoral rights, can participate in the qualification exam to be included in the list of candidates for judges. However, Gagik Jhangiryan is 66 years old. Therefore, it remains for the National Assembly, leveraging its parliamentary majority, to change the law for Jhangiryan.
