Promises Made to Appoint Two New Members as Heads of Yerevan State University Board of Trustees

Yerevan State University Board of Trustees President Gevorg Muradyan had resigned after the war, leaving the university without an elected rector or a chair of the board at the moment. In the last days of the year, changes were made to the composition of the YSU Board of Trustees by the decree of the Prime Minister.

Varag Sisseryan, the former head of Deputy Prime Minister Tigran Avinyan's office, has been replaced by the new head, Bagrat Badalyan. V. Papikyan, the director of the Prime Minister's office, has been succeeded by Gohar Mamikian, an advisor to the Minister of Education, Science, Culture and Sports. Former Director Armen Sargsyan has been replaced by the new director Hovhannes Movsesyan, and Board of Trustees President Gevorg Muradyan has been succeeded by Avetik Kerobyan, head of the IT department of the Armenian Stock Exchange and brother of Economy Minister Vahan Kerobyan.

Ironically, these authorities have promised the two newly appointed members, Movsesyan and Kerobyan, that they would be made heads of the Board of Trustees. Incidentally, the Minister of Education, Science, Culture and Sports, Vahram Dumanyan, has promised to support Kerobyan’s election to this position, while Movsesyan is under the patronage of Anna Hakobyan.

The university community is outraged, asserting that no one will be elected, emphasizing that the university should not be entangled in governmental squabbles. YSU is not an orphan's head to bring in people from the streets who are unrelated to the university's oversight. No specific date has been set for the meeting of the Board of Trustees; this week or the next, they will convene to elect the chair and secretary of the Board of Trustees, as well as to hear the annual report of the acting rector.
