Artsakh Loses 112.5 Megawatts of Hydropower Capacity Due to War
As a result of the war unleashed by Azerbaijan, the Republic of Artsakh has experienced a loss of hydropower plants with a capacity of 112.5 megawatts. This was stated by Deputy Minister of Territorial Administration and Infrastructures Hakob Vardanyan during a session of the National Assembly's Standing Committee on Regional and Eurasian Integration.
"Before the war, there were hydropower plants with a total capacity of 187.5 megawatts in the Republic of Artsakh, and after the war, only 75 megawatts remain. The loss has been 112.5 megawatts of capacity. This includes the Sarsang Hydropower Plant, which is 50 megawatts, four plants ranging from 12 to 13 megawatts, and one plant with a capacity of 12 megawatts," Vardanyan noted.
The deputy minister added that according to the preliminary energy balance for 2021, Armenia planned to import 330 million kWh of electricity from the Republic of Artsakh. However, due to the changes in the energy balance following the recent events, that electricity will be replaced by electricity produced from Armenia's internal resources, which will be more expensive than the electricity imported from Artsakh.
