Rescuers Discover Wreckage of Crashed Boeing in Indonesia and Remains of Passengers

Indonesian rescuers have discovered wreckage from a Sriwijaya Air aircraft that crashed into the Java Sea. This information was reported by the TASS agency, citing a representative of the country's naval forces.

“We have managed to find debris painted in the colors of the airline, as well as electrical wires,” said the naval representative. He clarified that “the parts of the aircraft were found between the islands of Laki and Lancang,” which are part of the Seribu Archipelago. “All of this will be brought to shore in the near future,” the official added.

It is recalled that contact with the passenger aircraft was lost while it was en route from the capital Jakarta to the city of Pontianak. It was later determined that the aircraft had fallen into the waters of the Java Sea. There were at least 65 people on board, including 53 passengers, among them 10 children, and 12 crew members.

Indonesian rescuers have noted the remains of passengers from the crashed Indonesian Boeing 737-524 aircraft in the Java Sea, according to the head of Jakarta's law enforcement department, Umar Shahab. “We assume that the remains have been brought to shore and sent to morgues, where they will undergo DNA testing based on samples taken from the victims' relatives,” Shahab stated, as reported by TASS.

Hours earlier, it was reported that around 40 divers from the Indonesian Navy would begin searching for the victims of the crashed Sriwijaya Air aircraft starting January 10, as severe weather conditions are currently hindering their efforts. Preliminary data has managed to establish the time of the aircraft's crash, but further clarifications are being made. Indonesian authorities have indicated that the Boeing aircraft did not issue a distress signal before the crash. Experts only realized that something had happened after losing contact with the aircraft.
