How is it Possible to Display a Video Containing Death Threats at Republic Square? - Tatoyan
It is absolutely unacceptable and condemnable to display a video containing insults and hate on the large screen at Yerevan's Republic Square last night (the image is attached). This was stated by Armenia’s Human Rights Defender Arman Tatoyan on his Facebook page.
“How is it possible to widely display such a video at Republic Square that contains death threats and encourages violence with expressions that insult dignity, especially during these responsible times? How can such a video be shown, clearly knowing that it will be watched by children and women as well? It is evident that this has been done by the illegal decision or tolerance of some public authority or official, which factually incites internal enmity.
Dear compatriots, we need solidarity and unity now more than ever, respect for each other's dignity and speech, regardless of political or other views. I urge citizens to refrain from expressing or further spreading any words that contain hatred and offensive expressions; such materials only increase tension in the country and can lead to violence.
I will definitely address the issue of the responsible authority or official for showing such a video at Republic Square as the Human Rights Defender. Accordingly, I strongly demand all individuals holding public or other positions to be vigilant in their actions and especially in public speech; non-working hours or days cannot justify illegal actions for officials. You are obliged to perform only the functions assigned to you by the Constitution, laws, or other legal acts. You have a specific legal status and are limited by the boundaries of that status. Any deviation can lead to legal liability.
Note: One clear statement for everyone. The jurisdiction of the Human Rights Defender does not extend directly to citizens or private individuals. The Human Rights Defender protects the citizen from the state, not the state from the citizen,” wrote Arman Tatoyan.
