UN Security Council Discusses Control Over Ceasefire in Nagorno-Karabakh

The United Nations Security Council has discussed the necessity of ensuring control over the ceasefire regime in the Nagorno-Karabakh conflict area. As reported by TASS, this was stated by Vasily Nebenzya, Russia's permanent representative to the UN, during a press conference following a closed meeting of the Security Council regarding the Nagorno-Karabakh issue.

“It is now necessary to ensure implementation (of the ceasefire), this is the most urgent issue, as this agreement was reached but has not been observed,” he said, noting that the most important issue remains how to ensure control over its implementation.

The diplomat also mentioned that this issue was discussed during consultations, and the council was unanimous in its approaches. Meanwhile, he clarified that sending a UN observer mission to the region would require a specific mandate from the Security Council. “It is not a fast process. There have been reports that the Russian Defense Minister has discussed with his Armenian and Azerbaijani counterparts how this control should be implemented,” Nebenzya noted.

The diplomat did not rule out that the OSCE mission could be involved in this consideration, especially since that organization is leading the negotiation process. “Who will be involved, with what roles, remains a question that is being discussed,” he added.
