Constitutional Court Has Three New Judges Appointed
The voting for the candidates for the Constitutional Court judges has concluded. The secret ballot was presented by Vahagn Hokikimyan, the chair of the National Assembly Counting Commission. Out of 132 members of parliament, 88 participated in the vote.
Candidate Yervand Khundkaryan received 84 votes in favor and 2 against, and was elected as a Constitutional Court judge. Candidate Arthur Vagharchyan received 86 votes in favor and 1 against, also being elected. Candidate Edgar Shatiryann received 85 votes in favor and 3 against, thus becoming a judge of the Constitutional Court as well.
It is noted that the Armenian government nominated Edgar Shatiryann, the President nominated Arthur Vagharchyan, while the Assembly of Judges nominated Yervand Khundkaryan.
Each parliament member was given three separate ballots, with the names of the three candidates listed individually, allowing them to vote for or against each candidate. The two opposition factions, “Enlightened Armenia” and “Prosperous Armenia,” announced their intention to boycott the process. They argue that the issue lies not with the candidates, but with the unlawful nature of the proceedings surrounding the Constitutional Court.
