We Have Nothing Against the Government, We Need to Support Our Families: Traders Protest Against Increased Customs Duties
Traders involved in the import and sale of clothing and footwear are staging protests in front of the government building. They are voicing their objections to changes in customs legislation that have resulted in the obligation to clear imported goods at significantly higher prices. They point out that under these circumstances, they will be forced to sell their products at six times the price, which buyers cannot afford.
One participant of the protest noted that the increase in customs duties will lead to a price surge that society is not prepared for. Another protester emphasized the need for a clearer response from the government. He mentioned that the head of the State Revenue Committee provided an example of stores where a single shirt costs 30,000 drams, arguing that a slight increase in prices would not make a significant difference. However, according to the seller, not everyone is prepared for this price change, especially those who have chosen to shop at markets, as even a 500 dram price increase can be a substantial burden.
“We have been told that we should receive a response during this time, but that response has not yet come. We have nothing against the government; we just need to support our families,” he stated, adding that similar decisions had been made during previous administrations, but issues were resolved through discussions, and such a wave of protests had not been seen before.
“Mr. Nikol Pashinyan, as a citizen, I ask you to solve this issue, to return to previous rates or to reduce prices a bit so we can work and support our families,” he urged. He also mentioned that there are individuals who have stored their products because they are not selling and cannot sell them at three times the previous price, as the new law does not work in their favor.
One individual entrepreneur has spoken with government representatives, who informed him that discussions are ongoing and that they will keep him updated on resolutions.
