Former Head of Nubarashen Penitentiary Samvel Mkrtchyan Released

The Yerevan Court of General Jurisdiction, chaired by Judge Vahe Sisakyan, has rejected the investigator's request to detain Samvel Mkrtchyan, the former head of the Nubarashen penitentiary. This information was shared with NEWS.am by Mkrtchyan's lawyer, Suzanna Khcheyan.

It is noteworthy that Samvel Mkrtchyan is accused of abusing official powers and inciting official forgery. According to the Investigative Committee, the charges stem from a criminal case related to the infliction of bodily harm on Vahagn Abgaryan, a convict known as a criminal authority within the same institution.

The report indicates that there is evidence suggesting that, in the interest of protecting the group involved, the penitentiary head S. Mkrtchyan encouraged H. A. and Z. P., a specialist in the facility's security department, to commit official forgery. Specifically, he instructed them to create a report addressed to himself, falsely stating that Vahagn Abgaryan had slipped and fallen after leaving the toilet in his cell, resulting in his injuries. Consequently, Z. P. prepared a false report, in collaboration with H. A., that did not correspond to the actual events.
