Karen Nazaryan Advises Azerbaijani Ambassador Not to Distort His Holiness's Call

ACI Stampa published a new article under the title "Papal Diplomacy" on August 29, where Armenia's ambassador to the Holy See, Karen Nazaryan, once again addresses last month's aggression by Azerbaijan in certain parts of Armenia's state border.

In the article, Nazaryan comments on the attempts by the Azerbaijani ambassador to the Holy See to misrepresent the UN Security Council resolutions from 1993, noting that this is a tactic used by Azerbaijan to prolong negotiations and to blame the OSCE Minsk Group co-chairs, with the aim of undermining the possibility of reaching a mutually agreed solution.

The Armenian ambassador clarifies that the resolutions focus not on the peace process but rather on the requirement to cease hostilities, which has been violated multiple times by Azerbaijan, as reflected in the resolutions.

Furthermore, the ambassador reminds his Azerbaijani counterpart that the resolutions adopted 27 years ago make no reference to the so-called 'withdrawal of Armenian armed forces' and adds that the Security Council resolutions recognize the people of Nagorno-Karabakh as a party to the conflict.

Nazaryan then points out that the Azerbaijani side pretends that the trilateral agreement on the ceasefire signed in 1994 between Azerbaijan, Nagorno-Karabakh, and Armenia does not exist, and absurdly references the OSCE Budapest Summit, which, incidentally, acknowledged the ceasefire agreement and its signatories, including Nagorno-Karabakh, as parties to the conflict.

In the article, the Armenian ambassador also discusses the essence of the issue regarding the right of self-determination of the Nagorno-Karabakh people in accordance with international law, in response to the ethnic cleansing, massacres, and Azerbaijan's extensive military aggression against the 400,000 Armenians residing in Azerbaijan.

Recalling that the international community and the parties to the conflict have mandated the OSCE Minsk Group to facilitate the Nagorno-Karabakh peace process, Ambassador Nazaryan advises the Azerbaijani diplomat not to attempt to distort His Holiness Pope Francis's earlier call for a lasting peaceful solution through dialogue and goodwill, and instead to clearly articulate Azerbaijan's position if it wishes to reconsider its agreement to the OSCE Minsk process.
