Giant 20-Liter Cyst Removed at Erebuni Medical Center

Giant 20-Liter Cyst Removed at Erebuni Medical Center

A 22-year-old girl presented to Erebuni Medical Center complaining of an increase in abdominal size. Following an examination by gynecologist Shake Khachatryan, she underwent pelvic and abdominal ultrasound, magnetic resonance imaging, and ovarian cancer marker tests.

The diagnosis revealed a giant paraovarian cyst in the right ovary region, located in the pelvic cavity, which had expanded to reach the stomach and contained 20 liters of fluid. There was also a dermoid cyst in the left ovary. The size of the cyst and the increased abdominal size was comparable to a 4 kg fetus at 40 weeks of gestation.

Considering the young woman’s age, the head of the maternity ward, Andranik Poghosyan, performed an organ-preserving surgery to enable a healthy and safe life ahead and the possibility of motherhood. The operation went smoothly; all cysts were removed, and the ovaries were preserved. The patient was discharged on the fourth day post-surgery without complications or health issues and is under regular medical supervision.

The surgery was conducted by a team of gynecologists led by Andranik Poghosyan with the participation of the head of the maternity ward's intensive care unit, Lusine Danielyan.
