Murder in Akhalkalaki: Causes, Eyewitnesses, and Details
The murder of V. Miranyan, a 27-year-old resident of the village of Kulikami, took place in the center of Akhalkalaki around 19:00 on August 8. This incident occurred during a brief argument, and it triggered mass unrest in the city.
Special forces and police were mobilized at the scene following the shooting. Witness accounts suggest that before the murder, there were two altercations in the daytime between the residents of Kulikami and A. Gabrielyan and his friends. According to circulating rumors, a young man from Kulikami was beaten and injured in the city, prompting young residents from the village to come to the city to clarify the situation.
However, it appears that the parties could not settle their differences, and shortly after 19:00 in the city center, V. Miranyan was shot dead in the middle of Mashtots Avenue. One witness recounted that just minutes before the incident, he had spoken with the victim, who had said he came to the city to discuss road paving issues and that everything was fine. Tragically, just a few minutes after that brief conversation, Miranyan was shot.
Another eyewitness described the incident as happening so quickly that they did not understand what was happening. Arthur Gabrielyan, the owner of the 'ArtSeg' hotel, allegedly shot Miranyan directly in the heart; despite swift transportation to the Akhalkalaki regional hospital, Miranyan was pronounced dead on arrival. Gunfire reportedly continued even in the hospital yard, where Gabrielyan and his friends obstructed efforts to transport the victim, turning over the vehicle carrying him at the hospital gates. The police attempted to intervene in the events that had started earlier that morning.
In retaliation, residents from Kulikami set fire to the homes of Arthur Gabrielyan and his father, Samvel Gabrielyan, as well as the 'ArtSeg' hotel. They also targeted the homes of the accomplices in the murder, Geno Zarmaryan and Kliment Kossy, who are friends of Gabrielyan. Notably, no one was injured in any of these arson incidents.
Local reports suggested that the altercation was merely a convenient excuse for revenge. It is believed that about 3-4 years ago, there had been a conflict between the Kulikami residents and the management of the 'ArtSeg' hotel, which had been settled at the time, though threats were made by Gabrielyan.
According to a person who watched the event on video, two groups of young men, approximately 10-12 individuals, were gathered at the site when a Mercedes vehicle pulled up among them, and chaos ensued with shots fired. Following the shooting, Gabrielyan was reportedly beaten by a group until they realized that a person had been wounded, leading to the quick transportation of V. Miranyan to the hospital.
It remains unclear why the police did not intervene during the two preceding disputes. Many in the city believe that timely police involvement could have prevented this tragic loss.
Immediately following the murder, a notable presence of special forces and police gathered in Akhalkalaki, including the regional governor of Samtskhe-Javakheti, Besik Amiranashvili. The unrest in the city subsided only after the considerable deployment of these forces.
Last night, the deceased was transported back to Kulikami, where security forces are monitoring the situation both in the village and in the city. The situation is relatively calm, yet there is mourning for the young man's death in Kulikami.
The Ministry of Internal Affairs of Georgia has announced that as a result of operational intelligence work, Arthur Gabrielyan (born in 1983) was arrested hours after the incident on charges of premeditated murder and illegal possession, storage, and use of firearms.
