Former Director of Artik Penitentiary Found Guilty of Abuse of Office and Fined
According to the Armenian Prosecutor General's Office, charges had been brought against the director of the Artik penitentiary, Jorjik Varagyan, last year. Information from the judicial information system indicates that Jorjik Varagyan's trial concluded several months ago, resulting in a verdict that is now in effect. This was reported by Tert.am.
As per the charges, Jorjik Varagyan abused his official powers by using his position against the interests of his service and failing to perform his official duties, causing significant harm to the legitimate interests of the state.
The indictment states that he allowed prohibited items to be transferred to an inmate based on personal interests, specifically to maintain friendly relations with the convict.
Before the trial began, the accused Jorjik Varagyan's lawyer, G. Harutyunyan, requested to apply an expedited procedure for the judicial review. The accused J. Varagyan endorsed the application made by his lawyer.
Jorjik Samveli Varagyan has been found guilty of the offense defined under the first part of Article 308 of the RA Criminal Code for abuse of official position, and he has been sentenced to a fine of 250,000 AMD.
