Tensions Rise in Zvartnots Village: Bludgeons and Stones Used, Injuries Include Deputy Mayor

Tensions have escalated in Zvartnots village of the Armavir region today, July 27, as an extraordinary incident occurred. A group of individuals, who are supporters of the former village mayor, attacked and assaulted the Deputy Mayor Suren Poghosyan. This was reported by Shamshyan.com.

In an interview with the site, Poghosyan stated that he is currently hospitalized. “There was an election, they lost, and now they are not accepting it. They keep provoking us, as insults have been decriminalized, urging their supporters to insult us. Last September, an election took place, and the former mayor Paruyr Sargsyan lost; the current mayor was elected. Now the former mayor's team is fighting against us, constantly creating incidents, including stabbings. Today, they started provoking us again and incited a fight,” stated the Deputy Mayor, adding that they had insulted him again today and started smashing his car with stones.

“After that, I parked my car in the yard of the village mayor's office; a journalist was in the village at that moment. From there, about 20 individuals, armed with pipes and bludgeons, attacked us and beat us. I sustained injuries to my head, face, and jaw. One of our members also broke his arm; mine is fractured, and my head was hurt; stitches have been applied. My brother's jaw was also broken, and Hamlet's head suffered two injuries. They all have marks from the pipe strikes,” he added.

According to the photojournalist, the violence resulted not only in injuries to the Deputy Mayor but also affected several villagers.
