Head of International Atomic Energy Agency Informed About Baku's Threat to Strike Metsamor Nuclear Power Plant
On July 17, Armenia's permanent representative to international organizations in Vienna, Ambassador Armen Papikyan, met with the Director General of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA), Rafael Mariano Grossi. This was reported by the Armenian Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
The purpose of the meeting was to present the situation created as a result of Azerbaijan's military operations unleashed against Armenia since July 12, and in this context, the extreme dangerous threats and statements coming from official Baku.
In particular, Ambassador Papikyan expressed Armenia's deep concern regarding the Azerbaijani Defense Ministry's threat to strike the Metsamor nuclear power plant, stating that such statements blatantly violate all norms of international humanitarian law and pose a serious challenge not only to the security of Armenia but also to the stability of the entire region.
The condemnation of targeting the nuclear power plant by Azerbaijan is nothing less than an outright manifestation of state terrorism.
Ambassador Papikyan expressed hope that the IAEA would issue its position regarding such irresponsible and dangerous statements from Azerbaijan within the framework of its mandate.
Expressing concern over the developments, the interlocutors once again emphasized the imperative of ensuring the safety and security of Armenia's nuclear power plant and highlighted the effective cooperation that has developed over the years between Armenia and the agency.
