Three Armenian Wrestlers Infected with Coronavirus

Three wrestlers from the Armenian Greco-Roman wrestling team have tested positive for coronavirus. The training camp scheduled to start on July 15 in Tsaghkadzor will be postponed for two weeks. This was stated by Araik Baghdadyan, the Secretary General of the Armenian Wrestling Federation, during a conversation with a NEWS.am Sport correspondent.

The Armenian Greco-Roman wrestling team was supposed to begin a two-week training camp at the Tsaghkadzor sports base from July 15. “The team underwent testing the day before, and we have 3 positive results. There are no contacts confirmed. Together with the coaches and the head coach of the team, we decided to postpone the camp for two weeks. It's not that the positive test results are the only reason; we decided to wait until the freestyle wrestlers finish their training camp before the Greco-Roman wrestlers begin. There has been a discussion with the coaches, and we believe it is not appropriate to hold a camp right now. We’ll do it in two weeks instead. At this moment, there is no rush; it’s better for the wrestlers to train individually in their locations.

A total of 32 tests were conducted, resulting in 3 positive cases. There was also 1 positive case among the freestyle wrestlers. A repeat test was submitted, and the result is now negative, but the wrestler has not joined the camp; we did not allow it. He is training individually; it didn’t make sense for him to join the team in the last few days. He will rejoin the team at the next camp. He had one contact, who was also isolated. The Greco-Roman wrestlers have no contacts, as they arrived and left solo. The names of the three wrestlers who tested positive will not be disclosed,” said Araik Baghdadyan.

After a four-month hiatus due to the coronavirus pandemic, the Armenian freestyle wrestling team, led by Habetnak Kurghinyan, has been conducting a two-week training camp at Tsaghkadzor’s sports base since July 8. The camp is closed and conducted under fully isolated conditions. Before leaving for the camp, team members and coaching staff underwent testing, with one positive result recorded.
