White House Uses 'Armenian Genocide' Term, Though Not Deliberately: The Washington Post

The White House spokesperson, Kayleigh McEnany, has indirectly recognized the Armenian Genocide, according to The Washington Post. It is recalled that on July 6, McEnany mentioned the Armenian Genocide, and previously, the U.S. government had refrained from recognizing this event.

"Decades after the United States government’s refusal to acknowledge the Armenian Genocide because it would alienate Turkey, the White House on Monday referenced the term, albeit indirectly," the article states.

The publication also notes that McEnany's statement was responded to by the Armenian Assembly of America. "We appreciate that the (Trump) administration has acknowledged that the Denver Armenian Genocide Memorial has been a victim of vandalism, as well as the necessity for a better understanding of historical facts," cites the organization's executive director Bryan Ardouny.

"McEnany's use of the actual term is particularly striking coming from the Trump administration, considering that Trump has ceased to maintain close ties with Erdogan. Furthermore, Trump withdrew troops from northern Syria, as opponents, including many Republicans, argue, allowing Erdogan to kill Kurds who were U.S. allies in the region. The former national security adviser to the White House, John Bolton, recently stated in his book that Trump told Erdogan he would intervene in a Justice Department case involving a Turkish company. This is reportedly concerning Halkbank," adds the publication.

The Washington Post also points out that the White House will assert that McEnany simply referred to the memorial by its actual name, but even that usage has been considered inappropriate in the White House for many years.
