International Media Report on Yesterday's Police Visits to ArmNews and 5th Channel
Internationally recognized publications such as The Washington Post, The New York Times, and ABC News have reported on the Armenian police's visit to two independent television companies that criticize the government under the headline "Armenian Police Visit Two Independent TV Stations That Criticize the Government."
According to Tert.am, police representatives visited the offices of these two independent TV stations on Friday, which have been critical of the government's policies.
Referring to the police visit to ArmNews and the initiation of administrative proceedings, American media quoted co-owner of ArmNews, Samvel Farmanyan, who stated that this visit was a signal regarding Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan's intention to "declare war on mass media." "He will suffer a disgraceful defeat," said Samvel Farmanyan.
American news outlets also noted that the two television channels have been critical of Pashinyan's government, closely monitoring its responses to the coronavirus pandemic and economic policies.
The media mentioned that the reason for initiating administrative proceedings was that the commentator of ArmNews did not wear a mask in the studio. The management of ArmNews noted that they were informed by the RA Public Television and Radio Council that wearing a mask on air is not mandatory.
Prominent American news organizations also reminded that Nikol Pashinyan was a journalist before taking office as Prime Minister.
