7 Years in Prison: Prosecutor's Closing Argument in Case of Serzh Sargsyan's Nephew
In the Shengavit residence of the Yerevan Court of General Jurisdiction, presided over by Judge Anna Danibekyan, the prosecutor’s closing argument was delivered in the case of Haik Sargsyan, nephew of the third President of Armenia, Serzh Sargsyan.
The judge announced that the trial has concluded and they are moving into the phase of judicial disputes. The prosecutor demanded that Haik Sargsyan be sentenced to 7 years in prison.
The prosecuting attorney stated that the evidence of the attempted murder is solid. He also requested the court to apply statute of limitations regarding the illegal possession of firearms.
The prosecutor presented the following argument: “During the preliminary investigation, Haik Sargsyan was charged under Article 235, Part 1, and Article 34-104, Part 1 of the RA Criminal Code. On April 1, 2007, at around 4:00 PM, in the basement of his residence, under circumstances that remain unclear, he fired a gun, illegally obtained, at Davit Simonyan with the intent to unlawfully take his life, aiming at his abdomen, but the crime was not completed due to circumstances beyond his control.
Haik Sargsyan’s family members used their connections to close the case. Following this, Davit Simonyan suffered poor health for about ten years and became disabled, during which time he was afraid to tell the truth.
Davit Simonyan has been interrogated several times and has consistently confirmed that Haik Sargsyan intended to unlawfully take his life.”
The next court session, where the defense will present its arguments, is scheduled for July 17 at 16:30.
It should be noted that Haik Sargsyan is accused of attempted murder and illegal possession of weapons that occurred 11 years ago.
