Two Criminal Cases Opened in Connection with Alleged Violence by Acting Chief of Police in Sisian

Two criminal cases have been initiated at the Investigative Committee based on reports of alleged violence by officials against citizens in Sisian. This information was shared with the media by the spokesperson for the Investigative Committee, Marina Ohanyan.

Recently, an incident occurred between citizens and police officers in Sisian, following which a service investigation was ordered by Police Chief Arman Sargsyan. According to the case materials, residents of Sisian lodged complaints regarding the actions of the acting police chief, Garik Muradyan, which led to the opening of two criminal cases. This was also confirmed by Investigative Committee spokesperson Marina Ohanyan.

According to the spokesperson, one of the criminal cases pertains to an incident involving Sisian City Council member Martin Harutyunyan and the acting police chief. The case has been initiated under the second part of Article 309 of the RA Criminal Code (abuse of official power with the use of violence). The other criminal case was opened based on materials prepared from citizen Garnik Simonian’s report, under the first part of Article 308 (misuse of official position to the detriment of the interests of service or failure to perform official duties) and Article 309.1 (torture) of the RA Criminal Code.

Earlier, MP Srvouhi Grigoryan from the “Enlightened Armenia” faction had also reported on the incident, informing that the acting police chief in Sisian had used violence against citizens. “Specifically for the new police chief: The acting police chief in Sisian has applied violence against citizens. Three citizens were beaten, one of whom is a member of the Sisian City Council, and another is a citizen born in 1952. The injured are in the hospital,” wrote the LHK MP.
