Deputy Prime Minister Proposes Negotiations with Russia on Reducing Gas Prices at the Border

Deputy Prime Minister Mher Grigoryan has sent a letter on behalf of the Government to Alexey Miller, the Chairman of the Management Board of Gazprom, proposing to start new negotiations regarding changes in the price of gas supplied to Armenia. The letter states:

“It is already evident that the consequences of the coronavirus will negatively impact the socio-economic development of our countries, leading to a decline in the volume of energy resource consumption. We will, of course, encourage growth in production and consumption in every way possible, but for the effectiveness of these measures, a competitive environment must be ensured. We all understand that the price of gas in Armenia is of significant importance in this regard. We also recognize that the scale and level of our countries' friendly relations allow us and require us to timely raise and discuss issues of systemic importance for the stable development of our trade and economic cooperation.

Taking into account forecasts and the current situation regarding energy resource prices, including oil and gas, in global markets, we consider it appropriate to begin new negotiations regarding changes in the price of gas supplied to the Republic of Armenia. In particular, we find it timely to discuss the reduction of the gas price at the border between Armenia and Georgia to a thousand cubic meters, as well as the establishment of a rule for payment for gas in national currency.”
