Possible Turkish Operation in Syria Would Be the Worst Scenario: Peskov

The press secretary of the President of Russia, Dmitry Peskov, stated that it would be the worst scenario if Turkish President Tayyip Erdogan were to commence military operations against the Syrian army on Syrian territory. This was reported by RIA Novosti.

“Let us refrain from worst-case scenarios for now,” Peskov told reporters in response to a question about how Russia is prepared to react if Erdogan begins military operations in Syria. “If it concerns actions against the legitimate authorities of the Syrian Republic, the Syrian armed forces, then this is the worst option for the development of events,” he added.

Earlier, Turkish President Tayyip Erdogan announced that a new military operation of the Republic’s armed forces in Idlib, Syria, is merely a matter of time. “Turkey has completed preparations to implement its plans regarding Idlib, just as we did during previous operations. Frankly speaking, the operation in Idlib is only a matter of time. Turkey will not leave Idlib to the regime (of Syrian President Bashar Assad),” said the Turkish leader during a speech in parliament before his party members.

Erdogan also mentioned that despite ongoing negotiations regarding Idlib, Turkey and Russia are “still far from reaching an agreement on this issue.” He expressed the view that negotiations held in Ankara and Moscow have “not yet yielded the desired results.”
