Former Defense Minister Seyran Ohanyan on Death Cases in the Army
Former Defense Minister, General Seyran Ohanyan, stated in an interview with Tert.am's correspondent that the Armed Forces should take a moment to pause and start from scratch on existing programs to prevent death cases in the military. He noted that during his leadership, he prohibited two stereotypical expressions: first, 'the army is a mirror of society,' and second, 'such cases happen in all armies.' He banned these phrases because, in his view, such expressions sometimes excuse what is happening within the army.
Commenting on the alarming recent trend of death cases in peacetime within the ranks, Ohanyan said that the military leadership knows what needs to be done, and they have a plan for educational and motivational work that should be implemented according to that plan. 'This task should be left to the army commanders, deputy commanders for personnel, and psychologists. We are not doing the right thing by generating unnecessary speculation in society; our adversaries take joy in that. The military leadership should simply take a moment to pause, set everything aside, and understand the reality,' Ohanyan stated.
