Screening of Documentary about Armenian Revolutionary Banned in Turkey

The authorities in Ankara and Istanbul have prohibited the screening of a documentary film telling the story of Armenian revolutionary Armenak (Orhan Bakir). The film is titled "Armenak: The Scar of the Blade on the Front Line." This was reported by Ermenihaber.

According to the event organizers, Armenak is a historical symbol of brotherhood among Turks, Kurds, Armenians, Greeks, and other nations. In this respect, only those with extreme and reactionary views would be disturbed by the screening of a film about such a figure.

On January 26, the screening of the film at the Hasan Yucel Cultural Center in Istanbul, along with an event dedicated to Armenak, was banned by the Kartal district police chief and subsequently by the Ankara Governor's Office.

The organizers note that these prohibitive decisions have no legal basis. They argue that only historical animosity toward Armenians and fear of revolutionary ideology have prompted Turkish authorities to engage in such intolerant and reckless behavior.
