Academician Aram Shahinyan Passes Away

At the age of 82, Academician Aram Artashes Shahinyan has passed away, as announced by the Armenian National Academy of Sciences.

Academician Aram Shahinyan's scientific work focused on the structural transitions of liquid crystals, surfactant micelles, and biological membranes, exploring their functional properties. He proposed a theory of structural transitions in these systems and developed the direction of chemical and biological informatics.

He was the author of over 250 scientific articles, 3 monographs, 1 book, and a co-author of 3 books. Shahinyan made significant contributions to the mechanisms of ionic polymer formation and the theory linking their properties. The results of his work became foundational for establishing the industrial production of polyacetals.

In the field of physical chemistry of micellar aqueous solutions and emulsion polymerization, Aram Shahinyan developed a theory on the impact of a system's dynamic structure on the mechanism and properties of emulsion polymerization.

His insights into surfactant solutions contributed to the development of a new scientific direction. Under his leadership since 2000, computational chemistry and biology have been actively developed in Armenia, with the founding of scientific directions in molecular dynamics and computational membrane biology, covering research on phospholipid membranes, micellar solutions, and lyotropic liquid crystals.

Utilizing computational resources, new scientific outcomes have been published in top-tier scientific journals worldwide.

From 1992 to 1999, Shahinyan served as the Deputy Minister of Science and Higher Education of Armenia, from 1999 to 2011 as the Vice President of the Armenian Academy of Sciences, and held various prominent positions within the Academy.
