Pedestrian Safety Enhanced with Special Lighting at Crossings

The first deputy mayor of Yerevan, Hrachya Sargsyan, announced on his Facebook page that special lighting has already arrived in Yerevan. As part of the project, the lights at the Davidashen bridge have been replaced as a starting point, and the replacement of other lights will be carried out throughout 2020.

In his post, he stated:

“Dear Yerevan residents, remaining true to our electoral promise of ensuring lighting in Yerevan using energy-efficient lights, in December 2018, thanks to the replaced lights in the Yerevan community, a competition was announced for the acquisition of energy-efficient lighting for the Shirak, Babajanyan, and Kyiv bridges, supported by the UN Development Program's Armenian office. The replacement of streetlights on these streets was completed by June 2019.

This project aims to install a total of 368 additional lights, resulting in a 76% reduction in energy consumption, an annual reduction of 50 tons of CO2 in greenhouse gas emissions, and improvements to 6 km of roadway lighting.

During the execution of the aforementioned project, a new financing model was developed for acquiring energy-efficient lights with the support of the UN Development Program's Armenia office, under which 50% of the total value of the lights is paid on the day of delivery, and the remaining payment (50% of the value) is paid in equal installments over five years.

Considering that our policy is directed towards the balanced development of all administrative districts of the Yerevan community, it has been decided to implement the lighting upgrade using this financial model for the Nubarashen and Davidashen administrative districts (entirely), as well as for the Kyiv, Halabyan, Shiraz, G. Hasratyan, Leningrad, and Hakob Hakobyan streets.

As a result of this project, the number of installed lamps will total 241, resulting in a 76% decrease in energy consumption, an annual reduction of 531 tons of CO2 emissions, and improvements to 65.7 km of roadway lighting.

I am pleased to inform you that these lights have now arrived in Yerevan, and the lights at the Davidashen bridge have already been replaced as a starting point; the replacement of the remaining lights will be carried out throughout 2020.

Due to the effectiveness of this model, a competition has already been announced for the replacement of lights on Gayi, Armenakyan, G. Hovsepyan, Koghbatsi, Zakyan, Fuchik, Rubinyan, and Davit Anhaght streets. Additionally, to enhance pedestrian safety, 72 crossings will be illuminated with special lighting.

I would like to thank the UN Development Program's Armenia office, the Yerevan Municipality, and the employees of Yerevan City Lighting Company for ensuring the successful implementation of this project. This program will have a continuous nature.”
