If People Didn’t Understand What They Signed, They Are Free to Withdraw Their Statement: Kocharyan's Lawyer
Today, more than 60 cultural figures from Armenia and Russia issued a statement calling for the release of the first president of Artsakh and the second president of Armenia, Robert Kocharyan, and for a change in his detention conditions.
In an interview with ArmDaily.am, Kocharyan's lawyer Hayk Alumyann stated that he cannot say what legal proceedings could be applied to these signatures. “It is possible that this issue will not be addressed in that adult context. I believe they mentioned in their preamble that they do not sign as part of the legal framework. If they did not consider the legal procedure, of course, we cannot use it in legal processes without their permission.”
Responding to the observation that some cultural figures mentioned in conversations that they were unaware of what they were signing, the lawyer stated that he would not want to comment on that issue. “If those individuals did not fully understand what they signed, they are always free to withdraw their statement or say that they meant something else. That is a normal phenomenon.”
A video was also circulated online showing Levon Kocharyan meeting with Avo Khalatyan and Nune Yesayan. Speaking about various interpretations around the video, the lawyer said that he considers it normal for them to talk to each other about something. “Those who see something bad in that should explain why they see something bad,” he said.
