Turkey's Parliament Speaker Criticizes Resolutions Favoring Armenians in Baku
Turkey's Parliament (Grand National Assembly) Speaker Mustafa Sentop is in Azerbaijan to participate in the Parliamentary Assembly of Turkic-Speaking Countries (TURKPA). During his speech at the assembly, Sentop addressed both the Nagorno-Karabakh conflict and the recent recognition of the Armenian Genocide by the U.S. Senate, as reported by ermenihaber.
On the issue of Nagorno-Karabakh, the speaker reiterated the pro-Azerbaijani narrative often voiced by Turkish officials, stating, “We always say that the issue of Nagorno-Karabakh should be resolved in the context of respecting Azerbaijan's territorial integrity and sovereignty. We sadly acknowledge the world's indifference to this issue and the resolutions adopted in favor of Armenians,” said Sentop.
Referring to the Senate's recognition of the Armenian Genocide, the Turkish official expressed that they do not find it appropriate for parliaments to make decisions on such matters. “Not long ago, a major massacre occurred here (referring to the Khojaly events). It is painful and worthy of criticism that this is not being spoken of or has been forgotten. If an impartial and principled stance is not adopted regarding the issues of massacres and double standards are applied, it will not be possible to ensure peace and security in the world. We do not consider it correct for parliaments to make decisions on historical topics. That decision is political,” concluded Sentop.
