Head of Yerevan State University Department Considers Meeting with Araik Harutyunyan Beneficial for Lecturers
The meeting between Minister of Education, Science, Culture and Sports Araik Harutyunyan and lecturers has been deemed beneficial by Yuri Avetisyan, the head of the Armenian Language Department at Yerevan State University (YSU). According to him, one of the proofs of this is that the views and suggestions from both their side and the university regarding the working project have been taken into account to some extent. This pertains to the legal governance of the higher education system.
It is planned that deans will be elected rather than appointed by rectors. This is a significant step forward that can inspire hope that the subsequently formed academic council, which was previously referred to as the scientific council of universities, will be more substantive in its discussions regarding whether the subjects of Armenian Language and Armenian History should be mandatory or optional.
In any case, I remain of the opinion that the teaching of the Armenian language should be enshrined by law in the new legislation, at least for the time being, until we have a sufficiently structured general education system. In other words, high schools will play their role,” he stated.
