Alexander Lukashenko to Run in 2020 Presidential Elections in Belarus

The President of Belarus, Alexander Lukashenko, has commented on his intention to run for the upcoming presidential elections in the country in 2020. He made this statement after participating in the voting for the elections to the House of Representatives, answering questions from reporters, as reported by Armenpress, citing BELTA.

Lukashenko emphasized that he does not cling to the position but considers it essential to propose his candidacy, leaving the choice to the people. He noted that he has repeatedly addressed questions regarding his intention to run in the upcoming presidential elections. "If people do not support me in any election, I will not be offended by that," Lukashenko remarked, adding that he has already worked for many years. – "You think about whether I should run in these elections or not."

According to him, if citizens value stability, tranquility, and the confident development of the state and its sovereignty—essentially the policies carried out by the current president—then it is they who should initiate his candidacy. "Yes, we are not rich. Not because Lukashenko is bad. Because sometimes we work poorly and lack resources that exist in Russia and other countries (referring to reserves of natural energy resources – Note from BELTA). We create our wealth with hard work, as our people say, with our own hands. Understanding this, you should request me," said Alexander Lukashenko, emphasizing, "I will offer my candidacy in these elections."

As for the timing of the presidential elections, according to the law, they must be held no later than August 2020.
