Which Radio Stations and Media Outlets are Preferred in Armenia: Survey Results

In June 2019, a sociological survey was conducted by the Union of Informed Citizens and the APR Group in all regions of Armenia, including the capital Yerevan. The study examined the primary sources of information for the population, their trust in these sources, and how individuals utilize and verify information received from television, radio, newspapers, and the internet (including social media and online media outlets). The data was analyzed not only according to social, demographic, and age groups but also based on political orientations to ascertain any correlation between media literacy and political views.

Specifically, we focus on the responses regarding radio stations. When asked which radio stations they listen to the most, 19.7% of respondents mentioned Public Radio, 15.9% cited Azatutyun (Radio Liberty) or Radio Yerevan, and 10.3% referred to Radio Aurora. Following these were Vany, Radio Hay, Radio Jan, Avto Radio, Russkoye Radio, and Lratvakan Radio. It should be noted that these surveys were conducted throughout Armenia, where both Public and Azatutyun, as well as Radio Hay, are broadcast in regional areas. Radio Aurora is only available in Yerevan and Artsakh; however, Artsakh was not included in the study.

The most trusted television company, according to Armenians, is Shant (26.6%), followed by Armenia TV (21.5%) and Public Television (13.7%), while the least trusted is Channel 5. Among print media, the most popular and trusted outlet is “Haykakan Zhamank,” followed by “Aravot” and “Hraparak,” while “Iravunk” is noted as the least trusted. Media literacy is reported to be higher in Yerevan and lower in the Aragatsotn region.
