VIDEO: I Am Very Happy That It Was Funded, Pashinyan on the 'Mel' Film
The protagonist of the film has faced a challenge that is not new; it has long been mentioned in Armenian folklore and traditional medicine. Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan spoke from the podium of the National Assembly about the issue of Mel Daluzian.
Pashinyan announced today in the National Assembly that he learned about the funding of the film only when the buzz surrounding it increased. During a Q&A session with his government members, he stated: 'When I found out, I asked myself: let's say this film is funded by 10 different entities and it is expected that the Ministry of Education of Armenia would be one of them; how would I behave? I would be guided by the following logic: who is the film about? The film is about a person who is a three-time champion of Europe and a record holder, whose record still exists and has seen the Armenian flag raised three times and the national anthem played three times in his honor.'
The Prime Minister also noted that the film's hero has faced an issue that is not just a reality, but also exists in folklore and traditional medicine. 'The person, in whose honor the flag has been raised three times and the anthem played, who we have welcomed, awarded laurels, praised, and given awards, has reached the brink of suicide due to that problem. This is a problem with a medical indication, which the modern world is addressing,' said Pashinyan.
The Prime Minister deemed unacceptable the attitude where a person is glorified but when their issues become known, everyone turns their back on them. 'It is true, I was not informed, but I am very happy that this film has been funded because our envisioned moral-psychological portrait of Armenia is not like that,' he added.
It is worth noting that the 'Mel' film is about weightlifter Meline (Mel) Daluzian, her ups and downs. The key theme of the film is the story of a loving couple fighting for the rights of sexual minorities, their journey together, and how their relationship changes under external and internal influences.
Let us remind you that the state has allocated 20 million drams for the filming of the movie about transgender Meline Daluzian.
